Evolution of language: the use and misuse of the term ‘social media’.

I wanted to write a blog post on something which has been bugging me for some time now. As someone who enjoys being a pedant every now and then I’d like to exercise my right to grumble about the use of ‘social media’ as a generic blanket term for what we called ‘social networking’ only a few years ago.

I understand that media is much easier to say than networking and has one less syllable, but the fact of the matter is that by calling a social network social media the definition is outright wrong from the word go.
To argue my case I’d like to copy and paste some dictionary definitions which define the three words, social, networking / network and media.

Virgin Media Pioneers At Guardian Activate Summit 2010 – My Perspective

The Guardian Activate Summit is an annual conference in London which attracts some of the biggest innovators in the future of Technology today.
At 2010’s July 1st event online network for young Entrepreneurs, Virgin Media Pioneers invited a select few of their members to attend the event with some of their staff.

I was privileged enough to be one of those few and our role was to shout as loudly as we could about the video based network which had provided us a challenging platform to air our business ideas and questions in a like minded peer to peer network. A group of us went down to London for a Start up Pitching Day workshop which ran the day before the event itself.

Romeo and Juliet Trailers at North Halifax Grammar School for Make A Wish Entertainment- 2009 and 2010

I’ve been lucky enough to be asked to deliver two days of media workshops at North Halifax Grammar School for two years in 2009 and 2010.
Nicky Ball, crew and freelance development manager at Screen Yorkshire passed on my details to Suzanne who is the director of Make A Wish Entertainment, who provide creative and artistic parties for children in early 2009 which led to the two day workshops with one group per day.
After a very nervous time on my first day, all went swimmingly and the student produced some great videos, which I held onto until 2010 when I was asked back and I could use the previous years efforts as an example of what can be done in one day.

How Singular Software’s “Plural Eyes” Takes The Strain Out Of Audio Synch and Speeds Up My Editing Workflow (software review)

I’ve recently come across a small piece of software which packs a BIG punch. Having been a film maker and editor for a good 8+ years now (although it’s probably more, but I don’t want to realise quite how many!), I’ve worked on countless music promos, and more recently in my career have begun to specialise in “Behind the Scenes” …

Using social media in business – is there an application process and life cycle?

I’ve been thinking recently about social media – as in audio, video and design which is online and available for people to see. Typically these will be hosted on platforms with social mechanism such as linking, disliking, sharing and embedding which will allow others to engage with the content and share it: and is ultimately likely to be the reason why content is out there at all.

If someone goes to the effort to produce something and they then make the decision to upload the content online and opening it up to the real world they will naturally have some hesitations and fears. maybe they think the germ of an idea will getstolen or maybe even the work itself. If and when the decision is made to overcome these concerns and hit the publish button then presumably the publisher has sacrificed a few things in the hope that they get some return on their investment or ROI.

“12 Seconds” Online Video Service Review

12 Seconds

What does it do?

12seconds is the best place online for video status updates. It’s a super easy way to share what you’re doing with your friends and family using short video clips. You can use your web cam or mobile phone. Show your friends where you are, share your thoughts, or tell them how you’re doing. We are building a video status platform that will help you keep up to date with your friends 12 seconds at a time.

What is it for?

We make it super easy to share your videos on Twitter and Facebook. Plus we have widgets and embed codes to share on your blog or MySpace, Tumblr, or anywhere else.

How does it do it?

By an application (which I haven’t got to work yet) for the Iphone or straight to your account via your PC or laptop which shares your video on Twitter, Facebook or your site through widgets.

Why do you use it?

No reason apart from to enjoy a video update! Why 12 seconds….

“Because anything longer is boring. The scientists here at the 12seconds dodecaplex have conducted countless hours of research to determine the precise amount of time it takes for boredom or apathy to set in during typical Internet video viewing. Our patent pending Electro-Tear-Duct Prongers have determined that exactly 12 seconds of video is the ideal amount of time to keep anything interesting.”

“TwitVid” Twitter Video Service Review

Twitvid

What does it do?

Easily Share Videos on Twitter from your phone, PC or the Twitvid API

What is it for?

It’s like the Facebook or Twit Pic of video – it feel really social and interactive with emphasis on user interaction through page backgrounds and flexibility for the user by enabling phone and computer access.

How does it do it?

You can access Twitvid via the website by signing in using your Twitter name and password, or by the free Iphone app which is really simple.

Why do you use it?

I have used it the KhaoZ Media sessions because it’s more social, and it’s more accessible than TweetReel – you don’t need an Iphone to use it – you could use it on your Twitter account and choose videos form your PC and your laptop.

Where do you get it from?

The Iphone App Store for your Iphone and twitvid.com otherwise.
